Our Program
Methodology

AeroStar teaches skills necessary to not just participate, but LEAD the next generation of Aerospace STEM innovation. Students are immersed in inquiry-based learning, engineering design projects, they operate flight simulators, remote controlled helicopters, drones, RC airplanes and VR headsets. They also build model airplanes and rockets to specifications. They study and demonstrate extensive knowledge on flight theory, aviation weather, aircraft radio operation, aircraft cockpit instrumentation and STEM careers.

We soar above other programs because we provide years of ongoing support to students interested in pursuing pathways in Aviation/STEM.

Grades K-4: AeroSparks

This program is for grades K-4 and takes place one Saturday per quarter.

This session is designed to expose young children to aviation and aerospace through age appropriate activities, stories, movies and field trips. They also learn the anatomy of an aircraft, the history of aviation, aviation safety and space exploration.

Grades 3 & Up: Build A Glider

Are you ready to embark on an exciting and educational journey in aviation? Our Balsa Wood Glider Plane Project, in collaboration with our friends at STIIX, offers you the opportunity to build a glider from scratch, providing a hands-on experience that will not only satisfy your passion for flight but also enhance your understanding of the science behind it! Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast, a student looking for a captivating engineering project, or simply someone who loves working with your hands, this project is designed to inspire and educate. With step-by-step instructions and access to valuable resources, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills needed to construct your very own glider.

Grades 9 – 12: Aviation Apprenticeships

Our AeroStars Aviation Exploration apprenticeship and advanced apprenticeship are designed for Teens and delivered in partnership with After School Matters.

Take off with the AeroStars Aviation Exploration program and soar into a new awareness of the aerospace industry and how it impacts our every day lives.

Teens grasp hold of real world practical applications of science and take on projects to discover the rich history of aviation; (including local Chicago aviation history), do hands-on experiments and activities from building kites and model airplanes to flying Flight Simulators and designing their own airports.

Participants also meet industry professionals who share their expertise, experiences and time as well as take field trips to places like local airports (Midway, O’Hare, Gary-Chicago), Aerospace Businesses, Aerospace Museum Exhibits and the Chicago Air and Water Show.

College & Career Pathways: Aero Ambassador

The AeroAmbassador mentoring program is designed for AeroStar Alum for students who are on College & Career pathways.

We offer mentoring, career mapping, letters of recommendation, scholarships and more through a membership.

Adults 18 & Up: AeroWork

Workforce development modules designed with specific aviation career pathways in mind. Apprentices gain extensive knowledge and real-world experience on flight theory, weather, flight planning, aviation careers, cockpit instrumentation, virtual reality, aerospace engineering, airline operations, and Air Traffic Control.

We test their knowledge with interactive challenges that build teamwork, industry exposure as well as prepare them to pass professional competency examinations for licensure. All of our workshops offer industry content that is rigorous and focused. By the end of programs, some will have taken their first flight, received pilot training or even obtained a license or certificate through our Not-for- Profit, The AeroStar Avion Institute NFP or partnering organizations.

Our blend of curriculum, project-based learning and industry immersion, offers a one of- a-kind experience within an urban setting. Until now, aviation education and training has been relegated to expensive university campuses, local airports, summer camps or events. The AeroStar Avion Institute brings aviation to the heart of the City, with year-round engagement for all.
